Contemporary Mixology

Bethesda, MD • Basement Renovation

Evoking the ingenuity of prohibition-era mixologists who skillfully enhanced the flavor of bootlegged spirits, Pinehurst Design Build orchestrated the complete renovation of this basement, blending contemporary design elements in the main space with Art Deco flair in the concealed speakeasy. This reimagined space now offers a common area to gather with friends and family and a serene refuge from the bustle of life.

The existing basement was plagued with numerous ducts and compartmentalized into many small rooms. To declutter the space, we removed walls and created custom millwork to camouflage ducts in the new kitchenette, fireplace wall assembly, and speakeasy wall. The kitchenette was centered on the fireplace to reinforce the space’s focal point, and the custom fireplace wall assembly added storage and room for a large TV. Inspired by a small 8’ x 20’ room, we designed a speakeasy room with a hidden door behind a pool cue rack. Stepping through the door, you find an intimate room with a barrel-vaulted ceiling covered in handmade bricks, antique beams and mirrors, and candle niches—a cozy room exuding timeless charm.
